Starting from Munich, Germany, Oktoberfest is the world's largest Volksfest and is held annually. It began as a 16-day festival from late September to the first weekend in October. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, and has been held since 1810. More than 6 million people from around the world attend the event every year. The Oktoberfest celebrations are held in a lot of places around the world and are modeled after the original Munich event.
In the 2013, 16 days, the festival as much as 7.7 million liters of Oktoberfest Beer were served and consumed. There is a wide variety of activities such as dog races and bowling and the registrations start months in advance. Visitors are provided with and may also enjoy a mixture of attractions, such as amusement rides, and games, as well as an extensive selection of traditional food such as Schweinshaxe (grilled ham hock), Hendl (roast chicken), Schweinebraten (roast pork), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Knödel (potato or bread dumplings), Würstl (sausages) along with Brezen (pretzels), Reiberdatschi (potato pancakes), Sauerkraut or Rotkohl/Blaukraut (red cabbage) along with various Bavarian delicacies as Obatzda (a spicy cheese-butter spread) and Weißwurst (a white sausage). Food vendors line the street and there are events for all ages.
A beer garden (a loan translation from the German Biergarten) is an outdoor area in which beer and local food are served, typically at shared tables. Common entertainments include music, song, and games, enjoyed in an atmosphere of Gemütlichkeit.
